How to get more followers on Instagram

Growing your Instagram followers isn't a mystery or a matter of secret tricks. It's work built on consistency and content worth saving or sharing. In this guide we look at what doesn't work (or only works on paper) and what actually delivers real results, even if slower.

1. Why buying followers (or using bots) is a mistake

Bought followers or ones gained through automated follow/unfollow bots inflate a number but never look at your content. The result is a profile with lots of followers and very little interaction: to anyone visiting the page, and to Instagram's algorithm too, that's a negative signal, not a positive one.

There's also a real risk: Instagram detects and penalises accounts with fake follower patterns, with loss of visibility or restrictions. The number at the top of your profile might look like an achievement, but if there's nobody behind it actually reading, it won't bring customers or grow a business.

2. Consistency matters more than any trick

Accounts that grow on Instagram over time have, almost always, posted regularly for months, not for a week. You don't need to post every day: you need a sustainable rhythm you can actually keep — two well-made posts a week beat seven posts a week for a month followed by two months of silence.

Instagram's algorithm rewards active accounts with content that generates interaction, and people become attached to whoever they see regularly. A profile that posts in bursts, with weeks of silence, struggles to build that familiarity.

3. The content that drives growth: saveable and shareable

  • A post someone saves to revisit (a list, a process, a guide) is worth more to the algorithm than a post that only gets quick likes.
  • A post someone shares with a friend or in a private chat (because they relate to it, because it's funny, because it's useful) brings your profile to people who don't follow you yet: that's how new followers arrive, not through hashtags.
  • Always ask yourself: would this content give someone a reason to save or forward it? If the answer is no, it's probably just padding your numbers without growing anything.

4. Collaborations: growing alongside other accounts

Collaborating with another account in your industry or area — a joint post, a story swap, content made together — exposes your profile to an audience that already trusts that other account. It works best when the two audiences are similar but don't fully overlap: a bakery and a florist in the same city, for example, more than two competing bakeries.

Collaborations work because whoever sees the content arrives with trust that's already been built, unlike someone seeing an ad or a sponsored post.

5. Optimise your profile: bio, picture, link

  • The bio should say in a few words what you do and for whom, not just your business name: "Artisan bakery in Turin, custom cakes to order" says far more than "Sweets for every taste".
  • The profile picture needs to be recognisable even small (your logo, or a clear photo of the product): on screen it's tiny, fine details get lost.
  • Always include a useful link — to your website, contact form or catalogue — and update it when something changes: a broken or outdated link is the first thing that loses trust with someone visiting your profile for the first time.
  • Use highlights to showcase products, reviews or behind-the-scenes: it's often the first thing someone who doesn't know you yet looks at before deciding whether to follow you.

6. Time is the ingredient people give up on too soon

Most accounts that don't grow don't have a content quality problem: they have a consistency problem. People post for three weeks, don't see results, and quit — right at the moment the algorithm was starting to learn who to show that content to.

With Carosell, the consistency problem is tackled at the root: ideas, copy and carousel graphics are generated and scheduled in advance, so posting regularly doesn't depend on having time and inspiration every single week. You stay in charge — you approve every post before it goes out — and meanwhile Carosell learns both from what you approve, edit or discard, and from what your audience saves, shares and when they're online, to figure out what works best for your profile.

Frequently asked questions

Does buying followers work to grow a profile?

No. Bought followers don't interact with your content, they lower your average interaction rate, and they can get your account penalised by Instagram. The number grows, real growth doesn't.

How long does it take to see real results?

It depends on your starting point and consistency, but rarely less than 2-3 months of regular posting. Anyone promising results in a few days is usually selling shortcuts that don't actually work.

Is it better to post a lot or a few, well-made posts?

A few well-made posts, published regularly, beat lots of rushed ones. A profile with weak but frequent content often loses interaction faster than one that posts less but better.
